My Boss's Chit-CHECK with me...
My Boss's Chit-CHECK with me...
Yesterday afternoon, my boss happily called me into his room for an informal chit-chat (or so he called it). Nothing really much, just that he again asked me to think of the plan for the whole year for two of the major areas my dept was dealing with. Well, nothing new, cuz this is not the first time. So I asked him, "Why is it that MD doesn't have to think?" but I always have to do the thinking part. I told him, that doing operational work (like what MD was doing) was certainly much easier, so it's abit unfair.. Then he said that he didn't want me to end up just doing operational work, cuz it's not value-adding as an officer. Yeah yeah, I understand his reasons but then I think as a 26-yr old, with only 4 years' working experience in the corporate world, I have my limitations as well. I told him that if we could draft out a plan (in his words, our directions and strategies) for the whole year, we could probably become management. And he said that that's the way it works. Management are not the ones doing the thinking, but us!!! (Then, what's the point of having management??) My point of view was that...yes, we could do the thinking, the thinking of strategies part, but they have to provide the broad directions before we can think of the strategies, right? If we can set both, then why bother to have them? Just sit there and criticise after all the hard work and thinking has been put in? And to think they are drawing a salary that is like dunno how many times higher than ours!! Anyway, my boss also added that I can't expect him to think of the directions as well!! Goodness, really felt quite sick hearing such things. So I m expected to come up with everything and also execute everything!! I really can't be bothered anymore...it all just doesn't sound that logical to me..
So I brought up the example of where I came from..where we think of strategies to tackle problems...the strategies arose because the problem was identified by my supervisors at that time. But now, I have to think of strategies out of nothing. And to which he replied, that's because we are doing higher-level work now, so we need to do that (by this, I gather, he means, create something out of nothing!! And the worst thing is I have to do it all by myself, not even with help from anyone!!!)
